You Inspire Me, Margot Tenenbaum!

November 21, 2008

The purpose of this category is to pay homage to fashion greats and great fashionistas who inspire & inform my personal style.

Margot Tenenbaum

I dare you to watch this clip and not need a huge fur coat and the perfect scowl. Margot Tenenbaum’s style is revelatory in the fact that it’s a perfect representation of personal style. No trends are dictating what she wears; instead, you get the feeling that her style has evolved from the accumulation of favorites over the years. Why worry about whether loafers fit with a polo dress and Birkin when you know that they instinctually work on you?

My very favorite thing about Margot’s look is not only that it’s hers and hers alone, but that she has made it into a strict uniform. Knowing what works on you is one thing; having the discipline to narrow the choices into 1 outfit is quite another. I secretly long to know myself so well that I have 1 look that flawlessly encapsulates everything about myself. If clothes are an outward expression of the inward self, Margot perfectly expresses her eclectic pensiveness through a mish-mash of pieces, heavily-lined eyes, and neat, baretted hair.

Such an icon.

I’m absolutely in love with this lookbook: equal parts French schoolgirl/60’s chic/grunged-out Brigitte Bardot.

Check out the line here. I’m literally running to Mini Mini Market tomorrow…

JCDC VS LEGO from Four H on Vimeo.
This video is absolutely amazing. I’m a really big fan of fashion brands who are willing to make the digital jump — the internet is truly the great democratizer of fashion (a good thing? Discuss…). I think we’ll see more and more brands jumping on this bandwagon (Viktor & Rolf also presented their collection digitally this season) in coming years.

Fashion Essentials: The Beret

November 11, 2008

This category is dedicated to those classic fashion items that no girl should do without…

The Beret

Your Inspiration:

Background: Berets have long been part of the military uniforms of several countries (including France, Russia, Germany and the US), where color serves as an important differentiator. They largely entered the fashion vernacular through the Beatnik aesthetic, which was appropriated by Yves Saint Laurent at the House of Dior. Today, berets continue to have artistic as well as French connotations, based on their origins; however, the addition of the toppers to school uniforms have added to their cache (based on the current Gossip Girl trend).

Why It’s Essential: A beret conveys an air of effortless chic; an outfit is instantly elevated by its addition, inheriting a French je ne sais quoi.

How To Wear:

– Pair a traditional version with a full skirt for a particularly French look.

– Add a slouchy version to a skinnies/vest/oversized tee combo for a rock-n-roll vibe.

Where to Buy:

Solid Color Hats, $11.95

Urban Outfitters, $24.00

Shopbop, $75.00
