How the Hell Do I Wear That!?! Harem Pants

January 26, 2009

While pants have slowly been mounting a comeback the past few seasons, they’ve finally reached saturation point for SS2009. The most intriguing trend to come out of the look is harem pants…

Potential Humiliation: 9/10. Hammer time?

How to Triumph: Pair luxe fabrics with otherwise streamlined pieces.
– Keep accessories (including hair & makeup) super minimalist & simple.
– Stay as far away from pattern as possible (see aforementioned MC Hammer reference).
– Always pair this look with heels — the potential frump factor here is HUGE.
– Buy the pants in a fabric that has good flow — movement is crucial here.
– Note that this item dresses up/down really easily — a major plus!

How the Hell Do I Wear That!?! Fringe Edition

January 16, 2009

Fringe turned out be be a huge trend for SS 2009; they showed up in several iterations — from hippie chic to neo-flapper.

Potential Humiliation: 7/10. Minus a great, innovative shape, you can come off as too costumey (cowgirl or flapper for Halloween this year?).

How to Triumph: Keep it super-simple!

– Explore this trend through accessories, and pair with an otherwise plain get-up.

– Know your genre: don’t mix the haute hippie look with Deco-inspired pieces.

– Make sure your fringe is thick & lustrous; anemic fringe spells cheap fast.

– Keep the shape on your piece simple but with a modern twist.

How The Hell Do I Wear That!?! Sequins Edition

November 9, 2008

In this section, we detail the potential horror of an unsuccessful foray into the uber-trendy, as well as the sweet, sweet victory that comes with perfectly pulling off an of-the-moment look.

Sequins were absolutely everywhere for the Fall ’08 season and come Spring, will be bigger, flashier and even more ubiquitous.

Potential Humiliation: 8/10. Without the right accoutrements, sequins scream under-ager on the prowl in the Meatpacking district louder than a Bacardi buzz.

How to Triumph: Diversify, diversify, diversify

– Pair your sequined piece with a slouchy, unexpected one (think boyfriend jeans, an oversized blazer, or cute loafers)

– Go all-or-nothing. Sequined embellishments rarely look classy.

– Wear sequins to unexpected places; dinner a deux, an acoustic set, or anywhere that serves beer.

– Keep hair/makeup/accessories to an ultra-minimum. No loud baubles, fussy updo’s or sparkly makeup should make an appearance.
