This, I Need: McQ Intarsia Cardigan

January 26, 2009

Although it feels like Winter’s winding down (what with Spring shipments and Fashion Week coming up), I get an awful sense that we still have a few more months of cold ahead of us…

To help make the bitterness a bit easier to stand, I’m planning on pairing this cardi with my Spring purchases. With prints, the look is very MJ SS2009, and with solids, you’ll look every bit the perfect neo-Dude (more on that later).

McQ Geometric Intarsia Cardigan ($490.00)

Fashion Essential: The Cardigan

January 21, 2009

Your Inspiration: Burberry Prorsum (especially SS08); Mister Rogers

Background: A cardigan is a variation on the pullover sweater, with a seamed front portion (via button or zipper) that can be opened in the front (how do you like that technical description?). The garment was supposedly named for James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan because he wore the item on campaign. The Earl’s notorious win at at the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War made him into a national hero, and his signature outfit became an (enduring) trend.

Why It’s Essential: The cardigan is one of the most versatile pieces of Winter-wear available; it’s a fashionable spin on the sweater particularly notable for its ability to pair with a dress, as well as its formal versatility.
How to Wear: Throw a fitted cardi over your favorite dress & belt or pair an oversized version with your favorite skinnies.

How the Hell Do I Wear That!?! Fringe Edition

January 16, 2009

Fringe turned out be be a huge trend for SS 2009; they showed up in several iterations — from hippie chic to neo-flapper.

Potential Humiliation: 7/10. Minus a great, innovative shape, you can come off as too costumey (cowgirl or flapper for Halloween this year?).

How to Triumph: Keep it super-simple!

– Explore this trend through accessories, and pair with an otherwise plain get-up.

– Know your genre: don’t mix the haute hippie look with Deco-inspired pieces.

– Make sure your fringe is thick & lustrous; anemic fringe spells cheap fast.

– Keep the shape on your piece simple but with a modern twist.
